"The Pioneer Cook Book is not designed to fit into our modern methods of preparing foods. It is a tribute to our forefathers and the heritage left us."
Copyright 1969, 1970 by Ruth E. Stone, Topeka, Kansas. 104 pages.
This is a cookbook my grandmother, Ruth Elizabeth Stone, wrote and published in 1969. The illustration is of a painting my uncle did; Bernard (Bernie) Stone.
This cookbook is fascinating. It covers all kinds of topics from how to harvest sorghum to how to prepare opossum and raccoon. There are historical tidbits and a large selection of recipes from the turn of the century. The sections of the cookbook are:
Relishes, jellies, pickles
Soups, Salads
Vegetables
Miscellaneous
Dried Foods
Indian Recipes
Beverages, Sandwiches
Meats, Poultry
Wild Game
Rolls, Breads
Cakes, Frostings
Candies, Cookies
Pies - Pastries - Desserts
