It is a perennial, herbaceous, bushy plant that typically grows to a height of 1 meter and, on rare occasions, even higher. In the temperate zone, notably, it can also be cultivated as an annual. The single-seeded fruits, which first seemed greenish-yellow, mature to become spherical, wrinkled, and black. The stems have many ramifications, are full, quadrangular, thick, and root at the nodes. Often, the position is inverted.
Although the typical bloom coloration is yellow, pink, and white, other floral arrangements can be found on a single four o'clock plant. A phenomenon that changes colors is another intriguing aspect. For instance, the yellow variety might produce blossoms that gradually turn dark pink as the plant ages. White flowers can turn pale violet in a similar way. Despite their appearance, flowers are actually modified calyxes with pigmentation rather than petals. The "calyx" is an involucre of bracts in a similar manner. The flowers are pentalobed, funnel-shaped, and lack a cup (which is replaced by bracteal leaves). Instead, they are made of a corolla.
Three to seven unpopped blooms can be found in the inflorescences. The aromatic blossoms, which have the nickname "four o'clock flower" due to their opening in the late afternoon or early evening as well as in cloudy weather, exude a perfume resembling that of tobacco flowers and draw moths for pollination. Since the anthesis lasts between 16 and 20 hours, it is visible for a portion of the day.
