Nina's Book
A novel about the fatal power of a woman in whom innocence and evil have been fused in the struggle to survive

Book Club Edition

Nina is a heroine worthy of the storytelling powers of Eugene Burdick.  Idealist made vile, she undergoes an experience so terrible that she comes full circle back to innocence and its strange inviolability.

Nina's strength first emerged in World War II.  When an American flier was shot down over Brittany she and her friends in the Resistance sent him off on the secret route to safety.  Rodney continued to fly but Nina was picked up by the Nazis and spent the next years learning how to survive in a German concentration camp.

She didn't see Rodney again until they met in the best nightclub in post-war Paris where he had come with a bride from home, Charity.  The story of these three is played out against the background of France in the fifties.  The tense, bewildering relationships take in friends in Paris and the countryside, old comrades of the concentration camp and the Underground.  What begins gaily ends in a bizarre menage a trois, with the resultant sex, suffering, and self-revelation.
