When, forty years later, Turner undertook to investigate the posthumous award of the Victoria Cross to his father for gallantry at Dunkirk, he set in train a series of events as startling as they were explosive.  First was the fact that the medal itself turned up at Sotheby's for auction and was bought by an unidentified foreigner for the unheard-of sum of 23,000 pounds.  But the fear didn't start until Turner learned that his father had died of a shotgun wound in the back.

Thereafter it's deadly race and chase, pursuit and counterpursuit, as Turner attempts, in particular, to track down a photographer by the name of Granek, an eyewitness to his father's death.  The chase leads from Dunkirk to a displaced persons camp in Middle Europe, to the suddenly sinister banks of the Wye in Wales, and finally to London and a lethal confrontation on Hampstead Heath.
