Bell loves the ways of sail and all of the once sleek old barquentine is still beautiful to him.  The paying passengers are another thing . . .

Harry Hutton and Ethel Peacock hate the ship, yet they are has-been, too.

The Reverend Butterfield, chasing private devils, and Oliver Wiggins, with a bevy of South Sea maidens to regret, are restlessly aware of slow progress.

Mr. and Mrs. Morris, fleeing the past, are buoyantly hopeful that the Cannibal will deposit them in a shining new world.

But the final passenger has no interest in the ship at all.  She is Charlotte King, a woman of quiet beauty with a disturbing unquiet past.  The story of Charlotte King is a novel in itself -- an engrossing world of its own within the framework of this book.

Gann introduces these people with impeccable artistry, and the voyage of the Cannibal becomes an intensely moving story of heroism and disaster, with a climax that is in every way inevitable and right.  It is Gann's finest novel -- a tremendous reading experience.
