FIRST EDITION

Gene Smith has taken his motif for this stunning novel a watershed of the twentieth century when the future and fate of mankind hung in the most precarious balance.

The time is the aftermath of World War I.  Captain Daniel Lansing, a West Point graduate, young, idealistic, is given the mission of helping to save the destitute and starving people of Hungary.  Umtil the conclusion of the war Hungary was a feudal world of wealthy aristocrats and impoverished peasants, a land of of beauty and desperation.  Like much of Europe, Hungary became a great seedbed for revolution.

It is into this cauldron of anger and violence that Captain Lansing plunges.  There he is confronted by the brutalizing aristocratic past and the bloody revolutionary future, men like Admiral Horthy who are determined to turn back history's clock by a thousand years, the idealistic Count Michael Karolyi, Hungary's wealthiest man, who seeks to bring his people democracy and decency, and finally the cadre of the revolution, epitomized by the enigmatic and fascinating communist leader Bela Kun.  These people existed and their portrayal is based on actual fact.

Using this seismic time and place as his background, the author weaves a fascinating story of the heartbreak of Lansing's mission and his tragic love for a beautiful Hungarian countess.  This is a tale of passion, love, betrayal and courage, of Byzantine plot and counterplot.  Brilliant in its evocation, Where Are My Legions creates and recreates an unforgettable lost world and cast of characters.
