INDEX TO ADVERTISERS -- This refers to the businesses listed in the "CLASSIFIED BUYER'S GUIDE OF THE CITY OF GREAT BEND". See below.

GREAT BEND -- This section includes: a Statistical Review of Great Bend with some information extending to other parts of Barton County (some topics included in the Statistical Review are: Population, Area, Climate, Parks, Financial Data, Postal Receipts, Telephones In Service, Industry, Recreation, Railroads, Bus Lines, Air Lines, Amusements, Education—including the number and types of schools, number of pupils, and number of teachers in public schools. Fire Department, and Police Department).

A nice historical background on Great Bend, it's school houses, religion, churches, first industries and other information, as well as a brief summary of their current standing as of the printing of this edition. This section also includes “Points of Interest From Great Bend”. This information was provided "Courtesy Great Bend Chamber of Commerce". A nice informative write-up.

CLASSIFIED BUYER'S GUIDE OF THE CITY OF GREAT BEND KANSAS -- (The yellow page section). In the first part of the yellow pages "are included the advertisements and business cards of firms and individals desiring to make a complete presentation of their products or services", followed by "the Business section, . . . a list of the names and addresses of all business and professional concerns of the city, arranged in alpabetical order under appropriate headings". This yellow section focuses on businesses of Great Bend, but other BARTON COUNTY businesses can be found listed in other sections of this edition.

POLK'S GREAT BEND CITY DIRECTORY 1970 Alphabetical List of Names. This is a white paged section, and contains an alphabetical listing of names:

"Wives names are listed with husbands...In case of a widow by death, wherever possible the name of the deceased husband is shown in parenthesis...The occupation and place of employment is listed...Ownership or co-ownership of a firm is indicated...The head of the house is indicated...".

POLK'S GREAT BEND STREET and AVENUE GUIDE INCLUDING TELEPHONE NUMBERS, HOME OWNER SYMBOLS AND ZIP CODES 1970. In this section:

"the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order followed by the named streets in alphabetical order, and opposite the number is placed the name of the occupants or houseowner or tenant. In the business blocks...occupants are shown by room numbers where practicable,...In all streets both sides of the street are included in one list."

These pages follow the white pages and are a slightly off white - with a hint of blue. They also have indicated those addresses that are vacant.

“POLK'S GREAT BEND NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY 1970” is a blue section and is akin to a reverse look-up by phone number. It has the numbers listed first and then lists who that number belongs to.

”POLK'S Barton County DIRECTORY 1970” (BARTON COUNTY TAXPAYERS DIRECTORY) lists the names of individuals with spouse and address/post office information, and also businesses with their associated information. This section extends beyond GREAT BEND--to include people located in other areas of Barton County. A sampling of those taxpayers located in Barton County included individuals from: Albert, Chase, Claflin, Ellinwood, Galatia, Hoisington, Olmitz, Pawnee Rock, Susank, Odin, Otis. This section also includes some taxpayers with addresses outside of Barton County though there is a very light sprinkling of them appearing randomly throughout this section with areas such as: Russell, Lyons, Peabody, McPherson, Hays, Hutchinson, Larned, Pratt, Holyroad (I think that's probably Holyrood), Kinsley, Colby, Wichita, Nickerson, Manhatten, Bushton, Concordia, Canton, and possibly random others -- I didn't go through all the pages in this section. Must be Barton County property owners that live elsewhere. It appears this information may have been acquired from the Barton County Treasurer's office, – but I have no idea if that would be their source for compiling this section or not. It does NOT include how much each taxpayer paid.

This book measures approximately:
9 and 1/4 inches from Top to Bottom (9 1/4")
6 and 3/4 inches from Side to Side (6 3/4")
and is about an 1 and 1/2 inches Thick (1 1/2").

This is a handsome hardcover with 658 pages. The pages are NOT numbered consecutively all the way through, instead each section starts a new numbered section.

There is a split between pages 90-91 in the last section (POLK'S Barton County DIRECTORY 1970 (BARTON COUNTY TAXPAYERS DIRECTORY) -- the last page and last flyleaf of the book. That section has 92 pages and the split has page 91/92 preferring the last flyleaf (see photo-it is glued slightly towards center so has the crease you see at top margin). Looks like this was the way it was originally made and the pages are tight and seem well bound – so I don't think you'll have a problem with that area, but you may want to reinforce that just to make sure. Previous owners business stamp neatly stamped on upper right corner of first fly leaf. Pages nice and clean as well as covers.
