There is some visible wear and some on the outside due to age, but it is in perfectly usable condition. It sits straight on the plate, just my photo that is crooked!! The inside plate is clean and mostly rust-free, just a few scratches from cutting cakes). The design is repeated 3 times around the lid, which is unusual as many carriers only have one design on the front. You might want to coat the inside of the cover and the plate with clear metal poly, to preserve it. Hand-washing only for this piece!! A flat, white plastic knob is screwed into the top of the cover. The top is held onto the plate by pressing it down firmly, then engage the two outside prongs on this piece. It stays closed when you support the bottom, I wouldn't advise just carrying it by the knob when it's filled!
