Add to Cart
Offered here is an original wood engraving by Rockwell Kent. An unsigned, trial proof impression created for and prior to the 1934 publication of L.M. Alexander's book "Candy". The image of this engraving is found on page 275 of that publication. The untitled subject is identified in the following reference simply as "Man in suit."

Reference:

Rockwell Kent Collection (GC042) Box 21 - Prints,
Graphic Arts Collection
Department of Rare Books and Special Collections
Princeton University Library.

I have no idea how many proof impressions of this subject may exist but they are certainly very scarce.

The image measures 7 x 5 inches and is printed on a sheet of thin, sturdy wove paper measuring 9-7/8 x 6-3/8 inches. The subject depicts an African-American Dandy leaning against a wall, holding a cigar.

CONDITION:

A superbly executed impression. The right side of the sheet has an uneven edge. A few stress marks at or near the edges and signs of light handling. Otherwise, a very fine and scarce print.
