Dode Criss 1909 - 1911 T206 Sweet Caporal tobacco baseball card.
This century-old, vintage baseball cards has been professionally authenticated and graded by Sportscard Guaranty, LLC. This original, tobacco card is graded SGC 40 VERY GOOD (VG) 3.
Dode Criss was declared by baseball expert & historian Bill James to be the first player used regularly as a pinch hitter. During his first season with the St. Louis Browns, Criss batted .341 but with only 91 plate appears. Despite Criss' league leading batting average that year, baseball commissioner, Ban Johnson, declared Ty Cobb the batting crown winner due to Dode not having sufficient plate appearances (a move that was controversial in St. Louis back in 1908). During his short, 4-year career, Dode Criss lead the league in pinch hits all 4 seasons.
