Prototype built starting in 1893 - length each 55 mm / 2.2 in
- All have Spoke Wheels

I purchased item at an estate sale.
Box and items are clean and absolutely new.
Out of the box only for pictures
Stored in a clean heated and air-conditioned space.
Never used on a layout
In 1851, Julius Pintsch invented 'oil gas' in Germany.
This gas was compressed gas derived from distilled
naphtha - a by-product of oil refineries. It was also called
Pintsch gas or 'fat' gas.
It was used mainly for interior gas lighting of passenger cars
and railway stations. It was also used for street gaslights.
Pintsch gas was very popular worldwide for illumination
of buoys, beacons and unmanned lighthouses long after
electric lighting was common.
The Pintsch Company (Pintsch AG) began installing interior
gaslights in railroad passenger cars in 1869. The compressed
gas was stored in one or two pressurized tanks suspended from
the underside of passenger cars. One refill usually provided
enough gas for 30 to 40 hours of lighting.
The prototypes for the gas tank cars offered in this listing were
used to transport compressed Pintsch gas to railway stations and
to other destinations where the gas was needed.
The original prototypes for these gas tank cars were built in 1893.
