1854 BU Seated Liberty 1 OZ Silver was designed by Christian Gobrecht in 1839 for a silver dollar that would come to be known as the Gobrecht Dollar because his name was prominently placed at the base of the rock on which Lady Liberty sits. The design that Gobrecht settled on was based on a sketch by Thomas Sully. Lady Liberty is casually seated on a rock with flowing hair and her shield lay beside her. Her twisted pose gives one the impression that she has heard a sound behind her. Her left hand holds a pole with a pileus while her right rests on her shield. The date of mint is below.
The reverse side of the round features the heraldic eagle, which Gobrecht based on John Reich’s design. The left facing eagle design was liberally used for the reverse side of many coins. Comes in a 2x2 coin holder.
