Guaiacum Officinale, is an ornamental tree introduced from the West Indies. Growing to about fifteen feet in height, Guaicum Officinale produces five-pealed lavender and white blooms and is the national flower of Jamaica. It is a glossy-leaved evergreen with twisted trunks. Guaiacum officinale is also reported to be a medicinal tree used by the healers of the Chhattisgarh Plains of India. Originally, the plant extract, called guaicum, was used for treating rheumatism, tonsillitis, snake bites and gout. In modern times, guaicum has been used to synthesize guaifenisen, which is an expectorant found in many cough syrups.
Growing Information: Soak your seeds overnight in water. The following day, plant your seeds at a depth of ¾” in a well-draining soil mixture. It can tolerate a wide range f soils. Keep soil temperature at about 75 degrees Fahrenheit and provide full sun or partial shade.. Maintain a soil that moist but not wet. Germination is normally slow. This species tolerates both drought and salt. It does fine by the sea.
