What is the Mississippi?  In the mind rises a panorama of images -- paddle-wheelers and crinoline petticoats, Vicksburg, Huck Finn, showboats, cotton and catfish.  But there are images that carry the mark of the river today as much as yesterday -- floods and violence and romance and explosive change.  For the river is made up, writes the author, "of the spirit and muscle of God; and, at times, of Satan's own sinews."

Hodding Carter has lived beside or has been associated with the Mississippi River for almost all of his life and loves the river as much as any man.  This distinguished American writer relates two significant themes in MAN AND THE RIVER:  man's persistent attempts to control the power of the river, and the meandering nature of man and the river in the river's valley -- a vast region of earthy promise through which flows the greatest river of them all.

The magnificent photographs by Dan Guravich are integral to the book.  Especially beautiful is his color photography for "The Everlasting Flowing," a full-length portrait of the river from north to south in all seasons.  The author's narrative is a poetic description that evokes the mood of a powerful and fascinating river as it flows through the fertile, lovely land of its making.

The author's eye for the unusual detail and his exuberant and unique style, combined with the photography that becomes a spectacular illumination of the beauty of the Mississippi, make MAN AND THE RIVER a book that will be treasured for years to come.
