The cover is made of a fairly heavy metal, probably tin, and painted on the inside with cream color paint. There is a sturdy metal handle on the top, held on with inside screws and bolts. Those are somewhat rusty, but there is no other rust on this piece. There are two pierced holes in the top for ventilation, to keep the cake moist. The top is painted a light green, with the remains of possibly hand-painted decorations, possibly flowers. ( If you are artistic, you might like to try restoring the designs). The base plate of this carrier is made of wood which is very unusual, and means that this carrier is older than most that you will find on the market today. It may date to the 1910s or earlier. The base has green painted trim around the edge, but there is no paint on the surface or the underside of the plate. It is in great condition, the wood is not warped or cracked and the top piece has a dent or two, with some scratches in the paint…..to be expected in a kitchenware item that has survived this long!
Measurements:
The top is10 ½” inch diameter and 4 ½” inches tall overall, excluding the handle. Wood base plate diameter is 11 ½” inches. It is a bit smaller than many of the lightweight tin carriers that were mass-produced in the 1950s and later. This carrier weighs a hefty 3 1/2 pounds.
The wood base plate is made of wood strips that were joined together, and it is still sturdy and sound.
This item is VERY old and so its appearance is nowhere near perfect. But it has a charm that newer carriers do not have – a wonderful item to add to a collection of Vintage Cake Carriers, or Antique kitchenware in general. The green paint is similar to the shade found on the wooden handles of many other Vintage kitchen items dating to the early years of the 20th Century. I have cleaned this item gently with natural dish soap, and water to remove the general grime of years.

I sell many Vintage items—please remember that VINTAGE means the item is around 25+ years old, it has almost always been used by someone, and may have a few flaws….if you want something perfect, then please do not buy Vintage! I do my best to point these flaws out, but I may miss something occasionally, so please be kind. Please check all pictures closely. Remember, VINTAGE also means they are not making these anymore, and you are buying something unique ! !
Explanation of Handling Charges: I MAY occasionally need to add a handling charge of $1.00-$3.00 to your order, Thiscovers any NEW packing materials I must purchase, extra-large padded mailers, etc. (I do recycle as well as much as possible---boxes, mailers, and packing materials.) This also covers any outsize packaging for larger items. I am an individual seller, with a limited budget, so I seldom offer free shipping other than for shoes, or other smaller, more expensive items.
