Antique Book Ruth Fielding In The Saddle or College Girls In the Land of Gold-1917 Edition

Here is a charming old book for girls, # 12 in the series of 30, and written by Alice B. Emerson. (This was actually a pseudonym...the books were written by a number of authors over the years from 1913 to 1934). It is subtitled, "College Girls In the Land of Gold". Ruth Fielding was an orphan who came to live with her miserly uncle. Her many adventures and travels made interesting stories that appealed to juvenile readers of the early 20th century. Young girls of today would probably enjoy reading about the era their great-great-grandma lived in!

This edition was published by Cupples & Leon Company, New York, in 1917. This book is in good condition, considering its age...97 years old ! There is no dust jacket, but the cover boards are sturdy and the pages, although lightly tanned, are not brittle. There are no markings inside the book. There is some light staining on the cover, which could possibly be cleaned. The book is not waterstained, nor does it smell musty. The cover boards are partly detached from the binding inside the back where the paper glued to the inside of the covers has worn through at several places, but this could be repaired. At the end of the book are several pages listing other series books of that era.

The Ruth Fielding books were written by three different authors. While the stories may seem quaint and the character's behavior pretty dated to modern girls, this series IS important because it influenced several other major series of girls' adventure stories that came along later....including the Dana Girls, Beverly Gray, and the well-loved Nancy Drew books. The stories of Ruth Fielding's adventures are very similar to Nancy Drew's. She has two close friends, Helen and Jennie, whose personalities mirror those of Bess and George in the Nancy books. Ruth's attitude toward marriage is similar to Nancy's---she is not in any hurry to give up her indepence, although she does marry and have a child in the later stories. Like Nancy, she is a strong-willed, independent young woman and determined to follow her own star.

Many of these books are becoming difficult to find, particularly the last 5 or so of the series. They were first printed in the early years of the Twentieth Century and continued through the Great Depression era. Since they were printed for young people, many were lost or discarded as girls became adults. Some were passed down to children and grandchildren, and acquired much wear over the years. The series is slowly growing in value, so it is an investment. If you wish to build a set for your children or grandchildren, or even simply for your own enjoyment (I am still working on building my own set, which I started around 30 years ago with a lucky find in an antique shop, of 12 books for about $5.00!) Now is the time to buy them!
