This a beautiful 24 k Gold Newari Thangka Painting from Nepal that I got on my recent trip.

The Newari are a small community of artists in Nepal with a special style know for its brilliant color and intricate detail. I have long wanted to start dealing the Newari Thangkas on my past visits to Nepal but admittedly their higher price range steered me off. But looking at this painting in front of me now, it is definitely worth the extra money.

The painting portrays the Kalachakra, a Yidam of the Gelupa. The Kalachakra has four heads twelve pairs of arms and one pair of legs. He stands in the Yab Yum position ( sexual union ) with his partner Vishvamata ( the Mother of all ). Kalachakra tramples Hindu Deities under his feet. With his right leg he crushes Kamadeva, the god of love, and his left, Rudra, a form of shiva.

From my light understanding of the wrathful deity thangkas, the Kalachakra deity painting essentially represents a protector to ones faith aiding in crushing ones obstacles on the path to enlightenment.

I know whoever gets this painting is going to love it.
