A Single Man

Colin Firth - Julianne Moore - Matthew Goode

I first read the name Christoper Isherwood while reading a biography of Truman Capote. Both were struggling writers at the time they met. Isherwood might be better known for creating the character Sally Bowles, in Cabaret, than for his excellent 1964 novel, A Single Man.

Why anyone took so long to make it into a film is beyond me, but it is worth the wait. No, not a "gay" movie or 1960s flashback, though the setting provides an utterly wonderful feel of the lifestyle and mores of the early 1960s. Colin Firth was nominated for an Oscar for his exceptional portrayal of a gay man forced to grieve in solitude over the car-accident death of this long-time lover. The story is moving, the characters touching. If you saw anything last year, A Single Man and Crazy Heart had to be on your list.
