SURVIVORS (SERIES 1 and 2 Combined)

A disturbing vision of a post-apocalyptic Britain whose population has been decimated by a killer flu-type plague. But fear not, because plucky Julie Graham is here to save us. She's Abby, a mum on a mission who, having survived the virus, takes to the deserted streets to find her son. Some viewers might remember Terry Nation's 1975 series of the same name and, though everyone involved in the production is at pains to point out it's not a remake or even a follow-up, there is no escaping the striking similarities. Still, Survivors 2008 stands up very well in its own right. This first 90-minute episode is absorbing, painting a convincing portrait of a society in meltdown, and tension builds nicely. The performances are good, on the whole, with Max Beesley in particular impressive as a murderous escaped prisoner who joins the survivors as they face a new world.

Survivors returns for a second series in 2010, picking up moments after the thrilling cliff-hanger to series 1. Abby and her mismatched Family of Survivors are in disarray, now struggling not just against the difficulties of day to day life amidst the ruins of the post-virus apocalypse, but also against the threat of other emerging communities and the machinations of the sinister Lab.

Set in the present day, Survivors is a BBC drama series that focuses on the world in the aftermath of a devastating virus which wipes out most of the planet's population. Deprived of traditional 21st Century comforts - electricity; clean running water; advanced technology - the resilient group of survivors at the heart of the series face terrible and unexpected dangers. With no society, no police and no law and order, they now must struggle to find food and water under the ever present and deadly threat of other survivors.
