From Inside Dust-Jacket Flap:
It is estimated that between two and three million Americans are afflicted with some form of arthritis, which Dr Morris Fishbein describes as “the most disabling of all the illnesses that we know.” Arthritis is, of course, inflammation of the joints, and was classified as rheumatism in the old days. The causes and treatment of this disease have been the subject of intensive research during the past few years. Recent advances in its care are made available in this volume, which is written in non-technical language for the general reader.
The author discusses the merits in various forms of diet, massage and exercise, the application of heat, hydrotherapy, etc., in the prevention and treatment of arthritis and related disorders. The book will be of great help to all who suffer from arthritis, and also to physicians, nurses, and others who may not have the up-to-date, specific information it contains.
”Arthritis and Rheumatic Disease” is the second volume in the Whittlesey House Health Series, published under the general editorship of Dr Morris Fishbein, editor of the “Journal of the American Medical Association.”

List of Illustrations:
(1) Atrophic arthritis of hand, showing fusiform swelling of fingers
(2) Hypertrophic arthritis, showing gnarled appearance and bumps on the joints below the finger nails
(3) Atrophic arthritis, showing atrophy of muscles of back of hand, particularly between thrum and index finger
(4) X-ray picture of atrophic arthritis of spine, showing extensive destruction of inter-vertebral cartilage and spinal curvature
(5) X-ray picture of hypertrophic arthritis of spine, showing bony outgrowths
(6) Tubs should be large enough to permit the patient freedom of motion. Individual therapeutic pools permit a few swimming strokes
(7) The application of brisk friction during the bath has a very favorable effect on the superficial circulation
(8) The vapor or steam cabinet is used to induce copious perspiration where indicated
(9) Pack room. The application of hot wet packs to affected joints helps to relieve muscular spasm and pain
(10) The needle spray and scotch douche are effective as a general counter-irritant
(11) The alternating hot and cold douche is an excellent stimulant to the circulation in robust individuals
(12) The buoyant action of the water in the therapeutic pool enables the patient to perform movements and exercises with comparative ease and freedom from pain
Condition: Book is Very Good. Non-toned pages and covers are clean with no splatters or spots, tight to binding, hinges and joints good, no creases, no chips, no writing. Light shelf wear to top spine edge and to corners. Dust-jacket is Poor with large open tears, crease, and chips on front and mostly on back and spine area; the tear that you see in the image is actually worse, sadly, than shown because the tear section doesn’t lay flat due to the crease above it, and there’s no way to capture that on a flatbed scanner. No mildew or musty smell.
BOOK #2 ... Titled ARTHRITIS and COMMON SENSE by Dan Dale Alexander. Illustrations. Menus. Hardbound (no dust-jacket) measures approx 6” x 9-1/4” with 255 pages, no index. Copyright 1954 New Enlarged Edition, Seventh Printing, March 1956 by Witkower Press Inc, Hartford, Connecticut. Printed by Hildreth Press, Bristol, Connecticut.
From Foreword by H E Kirschner, MD, Monrovia, California, 8-7-53
As a doctor, I feel that this book is an important contribution toward finding the answer to arthritis. Dan Dale Alexander’s methods and dietary approach have already gained excellent results for victims of this disease.
(gives case studies). Her improvement was markedly advanced. The patient is now free of arthritis advancement and is 90% improved. The victims described are typical, and they had serious cases of arthritis. For the majority of arthritics – whose cases are only in the early and moderately advanced stages – this book can hold even more benefit!
In addition to the special diet which the author explains in the book, he also advocates the use of cod liver oil. It has remained for Mr Alexander to unlock its great value by a new and unique method of administration. Simultaneously while taking the cod liver oil for joint relief, the dry skin is nourished and takes on luster; the dry scalp and hair are corrected – the hair takes on a shine; the nails stop splitting, and the ears begin to secrete a normal amount of ear wax. The sedimentation rate returns to normal.
Medical literature says arthritis is a constitutional disease. Here, at last – in this book – is a logical, systemic approach. The entire body benefits from the Alexander diet, which emphasizes the proper sequence of eating foods.
As a doctor, I read and agreed with the second edition of Alexander’s book. He has spent years of scientific research to develop his discoveries, and it has been a privilege for me to write this foreword for his Third Edition of Arthritis and Common Sense.
