On Hold Byzantine Justin II & Sophia K Coin c.565-568AD

Offered today from my personal collection of ancient coins is a rare Byzantine coin from about 1500 years ago! You can hold a small piece of history in your hands for the very reasonable price of just $10.00 plus shipping! The description of coin follows with a brief history behind this piece if known. Otherwise it will be sold as an "Unattributed coin".

This coin was in a batch of uncleaned coins purchased as a large lot and was cleaned in distilled water for about two months, but could be cleaned further if you wish & more details will become visible.

This coin shows on Obverse Justin on left, and Sophia on right, seated facing on double throne, both nimbate; he holds cross and she holds cruciform sceptre. Reverse shows large K; above, cross; to left ANNO; to right numerals representing regnal year(not visible on this coin due to wear); beneath , NI(Nicomedia). Coin is bronze and weight is 5.39 grams. Similar coin pictured on page 94, #370 of the excellent book "Byzantine Coins And Their Values" by David r. Sear.

Justin II - 15 November 565-5 October 578. The nephew of Justinian, Justin II was selected for the succession before his uncle`s death. On his assumption of power he found himself beset by numerous problems resulting from his great predecessor`s over-ambitious policies. Unfortunately, he was quite unequal to this formidable task. Within five years of his accession most of Italy had been lost to the Lombard invader, and in Spain the Visigoths mounted a successful counter-offensive. On the eastern frontier a long-drawn-out war was initiated when Justin refused to pay Khusru the customary tribute. The issue was still unresolved when the emperor became mentally ill and was obliged to appoint Tiberius, Count of the Excubitors, as Caesar(574).

Tiberius acted as regent for almost four years but at the end of Sept. 578, the emperor`s condition worsened and Tiberius was raised to the rank of Augustus and co-emperor. Justin died shortly afterwards.

The Empress Sophia, who is prominent on the coinage, exercised considerable political influence throughout her husband`s reign, inluding the regency of Tiberius.(Byzantine Coins & Their Values by David R. Sear)
