They said the glacier was no place for a girl.

They said Bastineau was dead -- but she knew better. She read his code message carved in wood at the little inn, carved in ice on the mountain side: "Ci-git mon coeur." Here lodges my heart.

No Bastineau couldn't die. He could, perhaps, love another woman? That she found easier to believe.

The trouble was that others sought Bastineau, sought him for no good but with a show of sympathy for Fenton. What they all found makes the smashing climax of Kay Boyle's novel of a love that willed to live.
