Description : From the flaps…
This is the amazing true story of the Cinderella from Marseilles who followed her heart to a throne in the bold, glittering years of Napoleon’s rise and fall.

Desiree Clary grew up with the first, feverish surge of Republican sentiment in France. She was young – very young; she was sweet and lovely when she met the shabby young general with the electrifying dreams of empire. His name was Napoleon Bonaparte. They were engaged to be married.

But Napoleon left Marseilles and, as all the world knows, married another woman. What the world does not remember is the strange, haunting story of the lost love who played a major role throughout his career. For Desiree pieced her heart together and fell in love with another man…a man who won great victories for Napoleon before helping to administer his final defeat.

In the fall of 1798, when she was nineteen years old, Desiree Clary, silk-merchant’s daughter from Marseilles, married Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, one of Napoleon’s greatest generals and a future Marshal of France. They had one of the long, true loves of history…a love that started in anguish (Desiree tried to drown herself when she first saw the future Empress Josephine in Napoleon’s arms) and ended triumphantly with the founding of a great new Royal dynasty; the Bernadotte kings of Sweden.

Annemarie Selinlko tells her story with simplicity and charm, underlining these great moments of history with the small, fascinating, personal details that made a woman’s world within the dazzling courts of Europe.
