In 1990, both the Oakland As and the San Francisco Giants put out A Call To Arms. For the As, the result was another trip to the World Series. For the ever-resilient Giants, it was one trip after another into the trainer's room.
It was Inequality of the Oakland As arms that carried them to their third consecutive American League pennant, and a date with the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series. The As used just six starting pitchers all season long?and had the unflappable Dennis Eckersley in the bullpen. Knowing they would always be in the game, the offense, led by Jose Canseco, Rickey Hender-son and Mark McGwire, was able to comfortably do its job.
For the Giants, the call to arms was one of quantity. Twenty-six different pitchers were asked to perform, as injuries played havoc with Roger Craig's rotation. And it was the grit and determination of many of these young pitchers, working in concert with the triumvirate of Will Clark, Kevin Mitchell, and Matt Williams that enabled the Giants to give the Reds a mid-season run for their money.
It's all here in A Call To Arms?the tape that chronicles the Oakland As and San Francisco Giants through the 1990 season?a season of promise fulfilled, and promise yet to come
