Used but like new
It’s the name of the Milwaukee rock and artisan duo and it's also an active idea. Embodying the do it yourself ethic of taking charge of their creativity and career, Sometimes Y represent a quest to reflect more profoundly and deeply about the world and our place in it.
Sometimes Y’s debut CD, I AM, and follow-up, THAT'S NOT WHAT I HEARD, exemplify alternative rock without the clichés. For singer-lyricist Lora Nigro and guitarist-composer Kevin Talamantes, alternative has more to do with intelligent perspective than prefabricated attitude. Alternative means the courage to follow your heart rather than someone else’s formula.
Alongside writing, recording and performing their own music, they co-create fashion that extends beyond conventional band accessories. Many of the visual forms employed by Sometimes Y, starting with the band emblem of a serpent descending the Tree of Life, mirror archetypal symbols in a reflection of the duo’s quest for wisdom beneath the surface of appearances. Like their music, the tangible, wearable objects fashioned by Sometimes Y are a call to mystery, a primal level of communication.
At a time when many old answers no longer ring entirely true and popular culture is more addicted than ever to consumption rather than contemplation, Sometimes Y dare to ponder nature, humanity and divinity in their lyrics and art. Avoiding the insecure bombast that has become a marker of the present era, their music offers a hushed accompaniment to their vision. Compounded from many influences, they produce music with silent spaces so the sound of infinity can be heard.
Sometimes Y has collaborated with composer/producer Peter Buffett (Dances With Wolves) and mastered with Grami Award winning, Bob Ludwig.
