On Hold The Glass of Frederick Carder by Gardner Steuben Glass

This listing is for a hardcover book, entitled The Glass of Frederick Carder. The front of the book says: The life work of the famed Steuben technician and designer, including all his achievements in the world of glassmaking. The book was written by Paul V. Gardner. The book lists the copyright date as 1971. It says that this book is the fourth printing. The book has 373 pages. This is a good sized, and heavy book. The book flap says that it has over 7,000 illustrations in color and black and white. It says there are 32 pages of color. It also says ‘In this beautiful and authoritative book, The Glass of Frederick Carder, is the definitive story of one of the most talented men in the history of glassmaking, the distinguished founder of the Steuben Glass Works.’ Interestingly, the book flap also says that the author served as Carder’s assistant for a decade, and remained a devoted friend for thirty years, and so is uniquely qualified to tell the Carder story and explain his methods and techniques. He also was the Curator-in-Charge of the division of ceramics and glass at the Smithsonian Institute. This book lists the colors he used, as well as the names of the patterns in which his glass was engraved, cut, or etched. It says that of particular interest to the sophisticated collector will be the chapter telling of Carder’s “rediscovery” of the lost wax process. The flap also says that approximately 7,000 line drawings from the Stuben catalogs, along with their identifying numbers, will be especially useful in detecting forgeries. The flap calls this book ‘A superlative reference book for collectors, dealers, artists, historians, and anyone interested in antiques and dedicated craftsmanship, The Glass of Frederick Carder is the complete guide to the creative output of this remarkable man who devoted eighty years to experimenting with and making superb glass.’ This book does not look like it was read, or even opened much. The inside of the pages themselves are in excellent condition. However, this book does have some flaws. All of the outside edges of the book pages have light discolorations. The top outside edge of the pages have a light brownish color to them. The side and bottom outside edge of the pages also have some light discoloration. There is a small red marker mark on the bottom outside edge of the book pages. The book has a light musty odor. Please take note of this and do not bid if it is a concern. There is wear to the dust jacket. The dust jacket has scratches and pressure marks on it. It has bends, several rips, and some discolored areas. There is a reddish brown stain on the front of the book, as well as one on the back. Although this book is not in perfect condition, it is still perfectly readable. I will be listing a few other books with a similar subject matter, so please check my other listings if you are interested. Please email if you would like more photos. Smoke and pet free home. Buyer to pay insured, priority or insured, media mail shipping, and I only charge for actual shipping costs. I am unable to accept returns, so please don't bid if you are not sure you want the item.
