Every old book is a new adventure for anyone who has never read it. ®

Description : From the front and back flaps…
This is a story of a man’s ambition and of a woman’s love – and of the two, it is difficult to say which was the stronger.

Pride Dawson and men like him are a legend now – dim and golden in the book of our nation’s days. They are commonly known as the “Robber Barons”, and they left their brazen imprint on America between the years of 1870 and 1890, a time of moral bankruptcy when millions were stolen by the stoke of a pen.

Big Pride Dawson was one of them. Black of hair and lean of jaw-a giant almost in his physique, and a giant in his lusts and ambitions-he built an empire upon the fallen bodies of those who opposed him. A penniless, embittered Southerner, he had been, in turn, a gunrunner during the Civil War and a get-rich-quick Western prospector in the years immediately following.

There were many men handsomer than he, but one look at the easy strength and gleeful mockery of his face, and no woman ever forgot it. With plunder as his goal and power as his instrument, he had lived and loved gustily until he invaded New York-and met the two women who were to change the course of his life.

He was a glittering figure, this tall, swaggering, prideful man-and a ruthless and tough-fibered one, as well. It would be simple merely to condemn him-yet those who knew him best loved him…

In Sharon O’Neil, whose story this is almost as much as it is Pride’s, the reader will meet a rare and wonderful woman. Generous and warm and appealing, she was in all things referent before her God and filled with a vast and haunting love for all humanity. Here was a woman to inspire respect-even worship-of any man fortunate enough to gain her love. Yet she became Pride’s mistress and allowed herself to be relegated to the backwaters of his life. Why? The answer is a story of love so vast and tender that it became somehow beautiful in spite of Sharon’s loneliness…

She even forgave him Esther Stillworth, lovely and alluring, sole heiress to the far-flung Stillworth fortune, who wanted pride badly enough to dangle forty million dollars before his dazzled eyes on the eve of his prospective marriage to Sharon.

In the pages of Pride’s Castle, you will meet Tim McCarthy, Pride’s trusted confident who, next to Sharon, knew him best; Courtney Randolph, the tragic, weakling son of a long line of aristocrats; Lance McCarthy, Tim’s son, who was forced to choose between his ideals and the woman he loved; dark, tumultuous Lilith, Sharon’s adopted daughter, whose love was as untamed as her heart; joseph Fairhill, who speculated with people’s lives as easily as with their fortunes; and Black Tom Stillworth, Esther’s father, thin and spidery and as cunning as an ancient rat.

Here, in a story with the sweep and drama of “The Foxes of Harrow”, you will learn how Pride Dawson cheated and schemed to outwit his rivals and achieve his goal, and of the pain and ecstasy it brought him and Sharon and Esther.

Once again, Frank Yerby has demonstrated that he is one of America’s great storytellers.
