The state of Bengal has been the principal seat of the shell industry in India. Married Hindu ladies used to wear these bangles as a mark of good fortune. Even fifty years ago the wearing of shell bracelets was universal in Bengal among the Hindus, but are now almost out of fashion in cities. This bangle is a thick 1 1/4" high with a 2 9/16" diameter opening. Striped shell set all around onto a sturdy brass base. Very attractive.
