Description : Ravel, like Debussy, was a composer of discipline and exquisite sensibility; an intellectual who through constant application sought and arrived at music of a gemlike precision. Such music was marked by temperate workmanship, despite a wide latitude in the effects of orchestral color. In this, Ravel was a true descendant of such fastidious craftsmen as Rameau and Couperin.

Mozart’s charming Concerto in E Flat for Two Pianos and Orchestra, K.365, written in Salzburg in 1780 when the composer was twenty-four years old, was originally intended for performance by Mozart and his older sister Maria Anna. Five years her brother’s senior, she was a gifted pianist in her own right and as a performer, almost as precocious as young Wolfgang. In 1762 when Wolfgang was six and his sister eleven, their father, Leopold Mozart, a well known violinist and teacher, took the children on the first of a series of tours exhibiting them as Wunderkinder in the courts and concert halls of Europe.
