Description : Few recordings of recent times have enjoyed the unanimous critical triumph of Command’s version of Brahms’ Second Symphony with William Steinberg conducting the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

The present recording of the composer’s First Symphony is a direct consequence of that triumph : this is a Command Performance in more ways than one.

Like the earlier releases by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in the Command Classics catalogue, this recording of Brahms’ First Symphony was made in Pittsburgh Soldiers and Sailors Memorial and the original master was recorded on 35 millimeter magnetic film. The stage in the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial is located within the hall itself, rather than against a wall; thus the entire auditorium serves as a resonating chamber.

Secure with the serenity born of their earlier Command Classics successes, Dr. Steinberg and his orchestra were at the very top of their form for these sessions. The result speaks for itself.

  3. The jacket is made of a heavy cardboard stock.
