Description : From the jacket flaps…
Tragedy has never been a stranger to Julie. At the age of thirteen, she discovered the body of her mother, a suicide. A year later her older brother, Tim, runs away from home; and within a decade her father, Hob, a respected novelist, dies of a heart attack, leaving as a legacy the request that Julie track Tim down. Although nothing in such a background has prepared her for either love or commitment, Julie finds herself drawn to Michael Gardener, a college librarian with a special interest in her father’s writings.
Julie and Michael soon become lovers; but Michael, a divorce, brings with him his teenage daughter, Melissa, only seven years younger than Julie, and Sheldon, his blind father. Julie immediately warms to Sheldon; and after a period of initial wariness, she and Melissa become close friends. Despite the war in Vietnam and the murder of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King, Julie is able to retreat into a happiness and rhythm she has never before known.
Then, suddenly, that tranquility is shattered. While sitting on the lawn of the Unitarian church in the small Vermont town in which they all live, Melissa is bludgeoned to death in broad daylight by a deranged man. The senselessness of the world from which Julie has sought refuge has now arrived on her doorstep. The specters of her childhood and adolescence, as well as her father’s final wish, return to haunt her. The ability to distinguish grief from outrage deserts her, and she is even more at a loss to explain the strange sympathy she feels for the sister of the murderer.
Hob’s Daughter is the story Julie tells. A novel in the form of an autobiography, it uses Melissa’s death and its aftermath as the turning points that finally give its narrator the strength and understanding to face her own past and to look forward to a new future. In T. Alan Broughton’s fine hands, the book ultimately becomes a fictional exploration of the patterns that sustain life, despite the pain, the chaos, and the bereavement that inevitably accompany it.
