Published in FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR
(13 1/2" x 10")

During the Civil War, Mr. Frank Leslie sent out about twenty skillful and world-renowned artists, one to be connected with each Department of the Army, with instruction to spare no expense in obtaining sketches of every battle, skirmish and military movement, to give to the anxious ones at home a vivid and realistic picture of the real war. These artists were selected from the Master of Graphic delineation, and included such names as Forbes, Waud, Taylor, Becker, Lovie, Schell, Crane, Davis, etc. The sketches from their pencils drawn on the battlefield amid shot and shell, and inspired by thrilling scenes and stirring times, are true to the battle life. These brave men went out with their respective army and navy corps and took the unmerciful chances of war in the pursuit of their artistic, yet dangerous but necessary calling. Their vivid delineation of a calvary charge, the heroic and intrepid courage displayed by the rider, the eagerness of the noble steed as he dashed forward to face the combat, and finally the bursting of a treacherous shell, or a bullet from an unerring rifle, separating horse and rider forever, from an impressive and thrilling tableau, which gives us a most vigorous outline of the havoc and horrors of war, and these tableaux cannot be had in any other work in existence. Naval engagements, storming for fortifications, bombardments, bayonet charges, in fact, every battle fought, and every incident of any importance recorded during the War, have been as faithfully sketched by the artists referred to, and appear as realistic to the old veteran who examines this great work, as if he were again standing on the field of action. The truthfulness of detail, force of character, accuracy of portraiture and depth of panoramic effect, carry us in imagination into the heart of the conflict, and make us as it were, close observers of the naval and military glory, so cleverly shown by the genius of the artist. The illustrations alone furnish a realistic view of war in a greater degree of comprehensiveness than hundreds of pages of text would be capable of supplying and are invaluable as a supplement to every History of the Civil Conflict. The Veteran recognizes in the faces, action, situation, and standards, old and familiar friends, and with these pictures before him can tell his children "How the day was lost or won."
