This enthralling book will stand as the classic historical account of one of the world's richest archeological sites -- the Valley of the Kings, which contains all the known tombs of the pharaohs of the Egyptian New Kingdom.
For more than five hundred years, until about 1000 B.C. the forty acres of the Valley held a busy community of tomb workers, the limestone landscape was white with the debris of fresh excavation, and the kings lay safe in their great stone sarcophagi. Then the Valley, lke Thebes itself, was lost from the historical record for hundreds of years and existed only in the accounts of the Classical authors and the imaginations of scholars.
John Romer is as unexpected, unorthodox, and brilliant on archeologist as Howard Carter, the discoverer of Tutankhamen's tomb in the 1920s. Over the past fifteen years he has come to know the Valley more intimately than any of his predecessors. His book contains two fascinating and vividly written stories. The first is that of the tombs in which the Egyptian kings, queens, and nobles of three dynasties were buried with extraordinary pomp and extravagance between 1570 and 1085 B.C. The second, equally exciting and full of incident, is the story of the travellers and archeologists of recent centuries and their hunt for the mysterious past of ancient Egypt.
The complete account of the intrigues, rivalries, and dedication of the European archeologists has not previously been told. To document it for Valley of the Kings, John Romer consulted the records of all the archeologists who are known to have worked in the Valley, and discovered many hitherto unknown facts. Most of the pictorial material in his remarkable book has not been published before, and much of it, though vital to the history of the Valley, is unknown even to specialists.
