The author of Sunflower has topped that dazzling book with this, her second novel.

The Human Rights Conference has been set, and because of it, the world is full of hope.  The Russians and Americans have at last agreed to work actively toward the establishment of peace.

The plan is the brainchild of an assistant secretary of state named Peter Lucas; implementer of it is Peter's friend and mentor, the secretary of state himself, Arthur Compton.  The conference will take place on the island of Korcula, off the coast of Yugoslavia.  The American President and the Soviet Premier will personally attend to sign the historic agreement.

But, only days before the conference is to start, troubling things begin to happen.  Four Russian dissidents, attempting to flee their homeland, are brutally killed, even though their amnesty has been promised as part of the Pact.  The Yugoslavian ambassador is murdered in the presidential box at the Kennedy Center.  And Peter Lucas's best friend calls to warn him that something terrible is about to happen.  Before Peter can reach him, his friend is blown up in his house and can only whisper a dying message:  Destroy the Korcula Conference.  It is not what it seems.

More and more, Peter and the woman he loves, Compton's daughter Nicole, are drawn into the mystery.  Peter is shot at in Rock Creek Park.  Compton, the man he trusts most in the world, deliberately lies to him.  Most important, he finds out that in Washington there exists a tape that, if played simultaneously with a tape in the Russians' possession, might reveal the real meaning of the Korcula Pact.  Peter realizes he is the only man who can find the tape.  If he does, will it destroy his dream of peace?  Will it destroy his life?

Such is the premise of Masterstroke, a book with all the qualities that made Sunflower so enormous a success -- lightning pace, brilliant plotting, believable and sympathetic characters, and a situation that might -- just might -- be true.
