Newgate Callendar of The New York Times Book Review praises William G. Tapply's mystery novels as "one of the more successful series of recent years." The Washington Post Book World hails his engaging series detective, Brady Coyne, as "one of the most likable sleuths to appear on the crime scene in quite a long time." Now, William G. Tapply will delight gis fans with the fifth and most exciting entry in his widely acclaimed Brady Coyne series, Dead Meat.
Attorney Brady Coyne's discreet service to Boston's wealthier Brahms is calculated to leave him plenty of time to pursue his real passion: fishing. So when he's called Down East to a reclusive Maine resort hotel to negotiate a land grant with the local Indians, he eagerly -- and rather loosely -- interprets the trip as an invitation to snare some land-locked salmon. He has no sooner arrived at Raven Lake, snuggled deep inside the nearly impenetrable Maine woods, then he finds the anticipated peaceful idyll shattered.
First, one of the hotel's guests disappears without a trace. Then a mysterious poacher shoots a moose with an old-fashioned crossbow on an ancient Indian burial ground. Then a second hotel guest is killed the same way -- and gruesomely scalped. When one of the local Indians is arrested for the murder on flimsy evidence, Brady moves to his defense -- and finds himself the next target.
Dead Meat is a rich, satisfying novel with all the elements that have made William G. Tapply's previous books so popular and widely praised: deft plotting, well-realized New England locales, vivid characterizations, and, of course, Brady Coyne's hallmark wit and wry, understated narration.
