Offered here is this very fine etching with aquatint by Shoichi Hasegawa, a well documented and listed Japanese artist. Signed and titled "Aurore" in English and Japanese characters, it is also numbered 44/77 all being in pencil along the bottom margin area, outside the image. The artist also placed his signature with Japanese characters in the plate in the bottom right corner and there is a blind-stamp that reads "Editions Empreinte" in the far left corner at the bottom of the sheet.
The image measures 23-1/8 x 19 inches and it was printed on a sheet of heavy wove paper with watermark "BFK RIVES" measuring 29-12 by 21-3/8 inches.
Shoichi Hasegawa (bn September 1929 Yaizu, Japan), is one of the most famous contemporary Japanese artists. Aside etchings, he also does paintings and woodblock prints. He began studies in drawing and painting at the Kokuga Institute in Kyoto and had his first exhibition in Yaizu (his hometown), in 1957. In 1961 Hasegawa left Japan for Paris and worked at the legendary Atelier 17 where he studied under the eminent graphics artist, Stanley William Hayter. Shortly thereafter, Hasegawa's work was included in numerous exhibitions along side works by some of the world's most prominent artists of the 20th century, of which included Hayter, Picasso, Miro, Calder, Chagall and many others. Since then, Hasegwa has had more the 60 solo exhibitions worldwide and is still working and lives near the Seine in Paris, France.
Hasegawa's works are in the permanent collections of: The Biblioteque Nationale, Paris; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Lowe Museum, Miami; Museum Fuji, Tokyo; South Texas Art Museum, Corpus Christi; Norrkopings Museum of Art, Sweden; Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; and many other museums around the world.

The sheet has a light mat burn around the image and faint tone that is barely visible. Verso, there is old tape mount stains along the top edge and light tone. There is a small piece of a paper stamp affixed and a small area of soil or a smear of printer's ink.
