This movie, released in 1959, directed by William Castle and written by Robb White, stars horror icon Vincent Price as eccentric millionaire Fredrick Loren, who narrates the film.
The exterior shots of the house were filmed at the historic Ennis House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built by his son, architect Lloyd Wright for retailer Charles Ennis in Los Feliz, CA. This house is designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The house is the last and largest of the elder Wright's four LA-area "textile block" houses which feature patterned and perforated concrete blocks that give a unique textural appearance to both the exteriors and interiors. The house was constructed of more than 27,000 individual concrete blocks made by hand using decomposed granite extracted from the site.
House on Haunted Hill tells the story of five people invited by eccentric millionaire, Fredrick Loren (Vincent Price), to stay the night in a haunted house owned by Watson Pritchard (Elisha Cook), who is also a "guest", with the stipulation that the power will be out and all doors will be locked at midnight, allowing no escape. Anyone who stays in the house for the entire night, if they are still alive in the morning, will receive $10,000. Of course, each "party guest" is revealed by Loren to be in desperate need of the money as they arrive at the "party"in separate funeral cars with a hearse leading, which is the reason for accepting the unusual invitation.
Loren explains to the guests that although the funeral cars are empty now, the guests may need them by morning. He also provides each guest with a .45 caliber pistol for protection.
With all five guests in the house and the doors locked, unrest, discontent, and distrust begins to creep up. How many guests will last the night to collect the $10,000?

The film was a huge success at the box office, and famed director Alfred Hitchcock would take notice of this, creating a similar low-budget psychological horror film, which would eventually become the hit movie Psycho. Castle himself was a Hitchcock fan, and would try to imitate Hitchcock's work in later films such as Homicidal in 1961.
