Disney/Pixar's Monsters, Inc.: Bowling for Screams is one of four related "Wreck Room Arcade" PC titles based on the Monsters, Inc. movie released in late summer 2001. Each involves a different recreational activity (pool, pinball, and tag are the others) with a free fifth game unlocked with the purchase of three titles. In this instance, bowling is the focus of the animated characters.
Bowling for Screams offers single- and two-player challenges in Monsters, Inc. style. After the introductory movie that stars Mikey and the gang, the action begins as you try to establish the highest score. You quickly discover this isn't bowling in the regular sense, however, as obstacles such as bumpers, metal arches, ramps and paddles (that can divert the ball into the gutter) prevent easy access to the pins as you use the keyboard to move the ball.
As in the other games in the series, easy (scary) and hard (horrifying) difficulty levels are available. While bowling for screams, not dollars, you collect power-ups in the form of cans to activate just before your ball hits the pins. The cans, obtained while avoiding obstacles on the lane, include splitting your ball into two balls, creating an explosion, or having your ball wildly attack the pins from all directions. In two-player action, players simply take turns as in a real bowling alley.
