Winter's always a hard season in Utah -- and it's even harder when you're on the run.  Tom Lavering, like most twenty-year-olds, is a little headstrong:  so when Bob Lee (the Civil War veteran whom Tom idolizes) is fired from the Honeybee ranch, Tom quits, too, and lights out with Lee for a season of hunting.

What Tom doesn't know is that Bob Lee is out for more than deer.  The older man, it seems, has his eye on Chun Kwo's Fan-Tan Parlor up in Wyoming, and he means to ride off with a couple of bags full of Chun Kwo's money.  Even if someone has to get killed in the process.

Tom doesn't care much for Bob Lee's plans, but he goes along for the ride.  And it turns out to be the most dangerous ride he's ever taken.  Now that he and Bob Lee are fugitives, stuck with each other for the long winter, Tom begins to wonder about the man he's followed so far.  And he no longer knows if he has more to fear from the Chinamen who are chasing them, from Bob Lee himself, or from the most dreaded and implacable bounty hunter in the territory -- the legendary Kanaka Bill.

It's the longest, hardest winter Tom Lavering's ever known -- and he's not at all sure it won't be his last . . .
