San Francisco Bay Area's own singer/songwriter Barbara Anderson has been busy. The last year of her 10-year musical career has seen the culmination of her efforts to find her own unique voice and have it heard by a wider Blues and Jazz audience. She returns to her musical roots on the Coast fresh from new successes in San Francisco, on National Public Radio, the BBC and the Internet.
In 2001, Barbara's recording of"Broken Hearted Blues" was chosen for the Annual MP3 CD and has put her In the top 20 female vocalists for over a year. The last year she had over 12,000 downloads by her fans at MP3 alone.
Barbara has been part of the music industry since her days as a young wife and mother living at Woodstock, NY's Bearsville Records, while her husband's band Lazarus was being groomed and produced by legends like Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul And Mary, and Albert Goldman, Bob Dylan's manager. Through the turbulent Seventies rock scene Barbara had many adventures as her life intersected with the likes of Mick Jagger and B.B.King.
It wasn't until about 10 years ago, upon moving to the Bay Area, that she began to find the courage to write her own songs and perform them, as part of a personal and spiritual transformation. Barbara naturally felt drawn to the Blues and Folk styles of telling stories of Life's ups and downs, imbued with empathy. She honed her craft in small venue performances and teamed up with the Michael Holt (of the Mommyheads) in a band called Naked Truth. This early work became her 1994 album "Evening's Bed" the proceeds of which were dedicated to the National Coalition for the Homeless, and received critical praise.
Since then Barbara's musical style and confidence has grown enormously as she rediscovers the joy of writing and performing with different artists and experiments with different musical flavors. Her original work shows influences from Gospel to jazz to Salsa, and performance she increasingly draws upon familiar and crowd-pleasing jazz and blues standards. Barbara's 2001 album"It Takes All Kinds" was dedicated to this multifaceted aspect of music, and launched her career to new heights.
Her songs were recognized critically and generated thousands of online listeners, boosting her audience to a more traditional media outlets with on-air radio play on National Public Radio's "Blue Plate Special" and on BBC Blues radio shows in UK as well as dozens of internet radio stations featuring female Blues artists.
