On August 31st 1977, normal life ended for the Harper family -- Mum (divorced) and her two sons and two daughters.

It began with a bang on the walls of their modest two-storey council house in a quiet corner of Enfield.  The banging went on.  A chest of drawers started sliding along the floor on its own.  The neighbours came in and searched the house.  So did the police.  A chair moved in front of a police constable.

Then the Press got hold of the story.  After five days on the job, the reporters called the Society for Psychical Research and Maurice Grosse joined the case, followed by Guy Lyon Playfair.

Grosse found the family in a panic.  They would not go upstairs even in the daytime.  They slept huddled together all night with the light on.

At that time they knew next to nothing about poltergeists.  A year later, they knew just about all there is to know, for it all happened to them -- and more.  Without doubt, this was to be the most exhaustively investigated and varied poltergeist case in the annals of psychical research.

The following December, during the week the younger girl had her first period, all hell (literally, perhaps) was let loose.  The girl made an out-of-body trip to the house next door, leaving a book in the neighbour's bedroom as proof.  Coins dropped from the ceiling.  Teapots vanished and appeared in other rooms behind closed doors.  Grosse and Playfair between them personally witnessed about thirty incidents for which no normal explanation has yet been given.

This House is Haunted is a genuine record, including photographs by Graham Morris which probably constitute the first successful professional attempt at recording paranormal activity on film.

Every incident is described by the author as it happened, without embellishment.  Every word of direct speech in the book comes off a tape recording made at the time.  And the book ends with a twist as telling and unexpected as any detective story.

There will probably never be another case like it.  There will certainly never be a case so well witnessed right from the first day.  Already the story of the Enfield Poltergeist has gone down in the annals of psychical research as a classic.
