Over 650 Civil War Photographs in this Volume

A year of almost constant turmoil and anxiety in America, 1862 was a fighter's year.  The Guns of '62, in over 650 extraordinary photographs, chronicles the military events of the second year of the Civil War:  the siege of Yorktown, Lee's saving of Richmond at great cost to the Seven Days Battle, his trouncing of Pope at the second battle of Bull Run, Stonewall Jackson's inspired diversionary maneuvers in the Shenandoah Valley, and the North's conquest of the Mississippi.  The guns of '62 were seldom stilled.

In addition, there are chapters on the navies, the railroads, and camp life, two unknown photographers -- Samuel Cooley and Henry Moore -- that offer a rare view of South Carolina during this period.

Following Shadows of the Storm, The Guns of '62 is the second volume of The Image of War, a six-volume series that will present over 4,000 photographs of the Civil War, half of which have never before been published.  All the reproduction in this series have been made from original prints or from the actual negatives.  They have been selected from over 300 sources and arranged both topically and chronologically.  Introducing the chapters are narratives written by some of the foremost Civil War historians, which place the images that follow in their proper historical context.

Not since the publication of Miller's Photographic History of the Civil War in 1911 has a project of comparable magnitude been undertaken.  Seventy years ago, despite the fact that some very important collections were overlooked, Miller's work was an impressive record, but by modern standards it is primitive and often inaccurate.

In recent years, due in part to the discovery of many untapped sources, scholars have made great advances.  As a result, The Guns of '62 and its five companion volumes will rectify errors and misconceptions that have endured for over a hundred years:  They correct wrong identifications of familiar views, they give due credit to artists previously unrecognized -- particularly Mathew Brady's assistants; and they finally acknowledge the pioneering work of many Confederate photographers.

The combination of modern scholarship and the most up-to-date printing technology make The Image of War indisputably the most impressive array of Civil War scenes ever assembled.
