This is the story of a woman -- revealing candid, and surprising:  the roads she takes to self-discovery; the forces from within and without that shape her life.  With freshness and compassion, it explores the mysteries of being female, the intimate process of becoming a woman, of being a woman.

The youngest child in a solid family, Maggie D. is a bright and gifted girl who becomes an attractive, vital, and sensitive woman.  Determined to direct her own destiny, by her own standards, she wanders from Chicago to Paris, to London, to New York, and at last to California.

We see her now, at thirty-six, being interviewed as part of a study of emotional relationships in contemporary society.  Helped by the interviewer's questions, she probes her memories and relives her life.  From the first awakenings of a girl-child to the fulfillment of a young woman.  Through two marriages, two divorces, motherhood, and a long-time love affair that can't work but won't end.

This is a sexual history in the most profound sense.  But it is much more than that.  As Maggie speaks, with humor and intensity, we witness the growth of an individual.  As she comes into focus, we see a flesh-and-blood portrait with the startling look of truth.
