Veteran Charlie Tyke is absolutely certain that he's seen it all in baseball, "but I ain't never seen anything like this."  That's because the red-hot National League pennant race has come down to the last game of the season between St. Louis and the upstart expansion club, the California Rush.  But before that final game -- which ends up being a baseball affair that won't soon be forgotten -- Charlie's story introduces:

* Frank Renna, the well-endowed member of the Chicago White Sox, who believes that in primitive "natural" cultures, women actually prayed to "soul-poles" like his, and that a return to that kind of straightforward simplicity is just what the country needs.

* Brigadier General "Howling Claude" Reebee, imaginary baseball manager and the inventor of a special kind of airgun pellet for the army called the "Reebee Beebee."

* Sunset Boone, former Western movie star and current owner of the California Rush, whose cinematic triumphs included the part of Arthur Law, the drifter who became a peace officer:  They called him Marshal Law, but his friends called him Marshal Art.

* And Jay Bates, the sociopathic manager of the Rush (and creator of Bates-ball), who, when asked about his motivational techniques, invites the interviewer to commit an unnatural act with a beer can.

Reporter: "Why would I want to do that?"
Bates: "That's where the psychology comes in."

It's all here, from minor league groupies to major league hangovers.  Sherwood Kiraly's California Rush provides the funniest baseball dialogue since Yogi Berra started talking.
