Ramesses II, Ramesses The Great, was a legend in his own time.  The greatest inspirer of buildings in the Ancient World, his achievement has probably still not been surpassed by any one man.  He also reigned for longer than Queen Victoria, lived to over 90 and fathered 178 children.

Ramesses' appetite for self-glorification was apparently insatiable:  "Ramesses conqueror of all foreign peoples, master of all crown bearers, Ramesses who fought the millions bids the whole world subdue itself to his power," was his own proclamation.

Eamesses and his rivals for the title of best remembered Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, Tutankhamun, could not have been more different in their memorials.  Ramesses' tomb is empty and humble -- Tutankhamun's the most opulent imaginable; Ramesses' body now lies in a simple wooden coffin -- Tutankhamun's is sheathed in layers of gold; Ramesses was probably a great-grandfather -- Tutankhamun was still in his teens; Ramesses built Abu Simbel and Karnak and left his mark on half the known sites of Egypt -- Tutankhamun has left us nothing but his name and his tomb; Tutankhamun's name took on substance only because of the discovery of his burial place -- Ramesses' reputation has lasted 3,000 years on the strength of his self-advertisement.
