In this world of disappearing and endangered natural species, a phenomenon has taken place that could mark the beginning of a new strain of lions.  White lions -- not albinos, but normal healthy lions, as white as polar bears, with eyes only a shade lighter than the golden yellow of a tawny lion's eyes.  This is the fascinating account of their discovery as well as the touching and hopeful story of one family's compassion and concern for their survival -- a survival in constant jeopardy because of their conspicuous whiteness, their total lack of camouflage.

There are now three white lions of Timbavati:  Temba and Tombi, brother and sister born in October 1975; and Phuma, a female born some nine months later to a different lioness.  These extraordinary lons were discovered by Chris McBride, who with his wife and daughter has spent the last several years studying a particular pride of lions on the Timbavati Nature Reserve in the Lowveld of the northeastern Transvaal, Africa's bush country.  McBridee has walked over 1,000 miles through lion country, tracking, listening, waiting, watching and photographing his lions in their most intimate moments -- moments that have rarely been witnessed, no less photographed.

The White Lions of Timbavati is a unique book of lion lore, written out of McBride's deep sympathy for lions, his first-hand knowledge of life in the bush, and his ever-growing concern for the plight of the white cubs.  It is a thrilling story that will stir the emotions and fantasies of every member of the family.  It is also a powerful and deeply felt personal statement that is meant to shake our complacency toward the conservation of all wildlife, toward our ecological responsibilities and, ultimately, toward our own survival.
