This book gives to the defining and describing America's traditional decorating styles and the forces that made them fashionable or convenient over a period of 300 years, handsome full-color photographs show the reader how to capture the mood, the look and the spirit of these popular period styles and adapt them to your own home.  It also shows, via detailed diagrams and directions, how to duplicate some of the characteristic furnishings and accessories that help give period rooms their distinctive flavor.

Included are a collector's guide to Early Americana, detailed instructions on how to stencil furniture in the Early American manner, diagrams and directions for slipcovering a typical wing chair, an easy way to have the eighteenth-century look of paneled walls, how to create neoclassic window drapery as graceful as a Greek toga and an arched bed-canopy inspired by a Napoleonic campaign bed.  The nostalgic Victorian era is brought up to date with instructions on how to do decorative Victorian beading, create a contemporary version of a "cozy corner" and make modifications of fringed and festooned Victorian drapery.

A chapter on "The Past-and-Present Look" indicates how we can use comfortable traditional furniture in today's contemporary homes.  There are also dozens of do-it-yourself projects for making draperies, valances, cornices, bedspread and bed-canopies that can be used in strictly traditional or in "mixed-period" rooms.  Based on and tested in McCall's Decorating Magazine, the material in this book is authoritative.
