Over 650 Civil War Photographs in this Volume

Often called the first "modern" war, the Civil War was also the first to be subjected to the scrutiny of the camera.  Shadows of the Storm, in over 650 photographs, covers the last uneasy days of peace, the vicious guerrilla skirmishes in Kansas and Nebraska, and the first battles of a long and bloody war:  Bull Run, Shiloh, Murfreesboro . . . .

All of the photographs presented here were made from original prints or from the actual negatives; over half have never before been published.  An introductory essay by today's foremost Civil War historians opens each chapter, commenting on and enriching the photographic pages that follow; these include "The Boys of '61"," who rushed to enlist, fearing an early end to the war; "The North at War," where the overwhelming industrial juggernaut was already building momentum; and the "Photographers of the War":  Mathew Brady and his hitherto unrecognized assistants, such as Woodbury, Roche, and Gibson; Southerners J. D. Edwards, and Osborn and Durbec; and others.  Additional chapters cover the navies, the process of 19th-century photography, and the war in the West, where such men as A. D. Lytle recorded for posterity the struggle that nearly sundered the United States.

Shadows of the Storm is the first of a monumental, six-volume series that will present over 4,000 photographs, the most impressive array of scenes ever amassed of this crucial period in American history.  Not since 1911 has a comparable project been undertaken, and never before has there been a collection of such quality and scope.  This is an absolutely priceless work, a resource no historian or buff can afford to overlook, a heritage for future generations.
