Over 650 Civil War Photographs in this Volume

The brilliant leadership, the daring maneuvers, the hot-blooded courage, the fanatical loyalty were all very much a part of the Confederate Army in 1864.  But in so many irreversible ways, it was evident that little else remained.  The piper had moved south, and payment was more than the Confederacy's surviving sons could muster.  The end was in sight, although neither side was aware of it, but not until more lives, more hatred, more glory, more bitterness were lost, and felt, and earned.

Reviewers continue to acclaim the six-volume series, The Image of War 1861-1865.  And here, the fifth volume in the series continues what Library Journal characterized as ". . . the beginning of a major publishing enterprise which when completed, will comprise a pictorial record without equal of the Civil War."  The South Besieged covers the War for Tennessee, the strangling of the South by the new Federal navy; the Wilderness campaign; the fall of Atlanta; Sheridan's Shenandoah campaign; and the war in the West.

Unique to this volume is a portfolio of remarkable photographs taken of the destruction of Atlanta.  Its drama has rarely, if ever, been so vividly portrayed.  As in previous volumes, the story is carried forward in extraordinary, long-forgotten photographs and in commentaries and essays by some of today's foremost Civil War historians.  The result is a mirror held up to a war, a reflection never before available to record the heroism and the horror of the battlefield.
