Over 650 Civil War Photographs in this Volume

Three years ago, when the premier volume of The Image of War series first appeared, Library Journal proclaimed it as "the beginning of a major publishing enterprise which, when completed, will compromise a pictorial record without equal of the Civil War."

Today that promise is realized in The End of an Era, the sixth and final volume in this monumental series.  The National Historical Society spent ten years, traveled 30,000 miles, crossed the Atlantic to England and the Pacific to Australia to locate 150,000 original wartime images.  From that vast treasury, more than 4,000 were selected for inclusion in this pathbreaking set.

And the story of those photos have told is impressive.  All the great battles and campaigns, from Fort Sumter to Gettysburg, Atlanta, and the Wilderness, are chronicled.  So are the civilians of two nations at war, their navies, their leaders, and in a half-dozen impressive portfolios, so are the photographers themselves.

In this final volume the armies of Grant and Lee battle in the year-long siege of Petersburg, here Sherman marches to the sea, here the organizational and industrial might of the North finally prevails.  Here the men who made war meet to make peace.  With the whole series as background, here you can see how they all viewed the "late unpleasantness" and marched into the troubled years ahead of them.

All the things that made reviewers hail this series as "definitive," "superior," "a treasure trove" are here in this farewell volume and it is all enhanced by a comprehensive index to the six volumes, making the series not just a moving experience to read, but an invaluable reference tool as well.

It is here, the sight, the sound, the wistful reminders of an end of an era, and the image of war.
